A sealant allows the natural stone to repel dirt and water, thereby increasing stain resistance. It penetrates the stone, which reduces stain absorption, keeping dirt and staining agents on the marble surface. It is important to remember that most sealants are not single application products; they must be periodically applied in order to provide protection.
Certain types of sealers can create a less durable top layer, which will increase your maintenance of the stone. Generally, sealers are not recommended in exterior stone work, because moisture can get trapped in the top layer of stone leading to surface cracks during winter freeze-thaw conditions.
